Genmo
FreemiumOpen-source AI research lab building state-of-the-art video world models with its Mochi model for high-quality generation
What is Genmo?
Genmo is a small San Francisco research lab building open video generation models. Its flagship, Mochi, ships under Apache 2.0 with full weights and code on Hugging Face, making it one of the few genuinely open alternatives to Runway, Kling and Luma. It is well regarded for temporal coherence, meaning objects and motion hold together across frames noticeably better than many cheaper options, and there is a hosted playground for trying it without setup. Both routes have a hard ceiling. Self-hosting Mochi requires at least four Nvidia H100 GPUs, which rules it out for most individuals. On the hosted playground each Mochi generation costs 100 credits while the free plan refreshes only 50 a month, so once the initial 200 onboarding credits are spent the free tier produces nothing. Output is capped around 5.4 seconds. Search interest has fallen sharply since the 2024 launch and the team is roughly fourteen people.
