What is Sora?
Sora was OpenAI's video generation platform, first shown in early 2024 and widely treated at the time as a turning point for AI video. Sora 2, released in late 2025, added synchronised sound and stronger physical realism and ran through a dedicated app alongside ChatGPT subscriptions. It is no longer available: OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on 26 April 2026, and the API is scheduled to shut down on 24 September 2026. Anyone with work still on the platform should export it, since OpenAI has said associated data may be permanently deleted after any final export window. Reporting attributes the closure to economics and liability rather than capability: heavy compute costs against modest revenue, sharply falling active users, and persistent copyright and deepfake problems including a collapsed licensing deal. OpenAI has said Sora continues as research into world models and that it may share more about a future licensed version.
