Cohere

Cohere is an enterprise AI company founded in 2019 by former Google Brain researchers, including a co-author of the original transformer paper. Its Command model family, alongside Rerank and Embed, targets retrieval-augmented generation, enterprise search and agentic workflows rather than consumer chat. North is its secure AI workspace platform, and the company has grown into sovereign AI for regulated industries, merging with Germany's Aleph Alpha in April 2026. The defining trait is deployment, not price. Around 85 percent of revenue comes from private and on-premises installations, which is the point for banks, telcos and governments that cannot send data to a public API. The trade-off is pricing opacity: mid-tier models list per-token rates publicly, but the current flagship models and the North and Compass platforms are all quote-based, so direct cost comparison against other frontier providers requires a sales conversation.
