What is HuggingChat?
HuggingChat was Hugging Face's free, open-source chatbot interface, launched in April 2023 to demonstrate that a credible open alternative to ChatGPT could be assembled from community models. Over its run it hosted more than 20 open-weight models including Llama, Mistral, Qwen, Command R+ and Gemma, served over a million users and powered more than 100,000 shareable Assistants, while doubling as a testbed for the inference work that fed into text-generation-inference and other runtimes. It is no longer available. Hugging Face closed the service on 1 July 2025 after 27 months, with CTO Julien Chaumond saying the team was making room for something more integrated with the wider Hugging Face ecosystem; no successor has been detailed publicly. Users were able to export past conversations as a zip file. For an open-model chat interface today, self-hosted options such as LibreChat are the common replacement.
